Lejre is an atmospheric and exiting tourist attraction for the whole family. 10.000 years of Danish history brought to life. Houses and settings from the iron age, stone age, viking age and 1800th century, historic workshops and domestic animals, placed in a beatifull historic landscape near Roskilde.

At Lejre Experimental Center it is history and archaeology which matter! Lejre Experimental Center is an open-air park in the most beautiful Danish nature, where you can stroll around between reconstructions of ancient living environments, like the Iron Age village, the Stone Age camp, the Viking market, the 19th century-farm cottages, and much more.
Lejre Experimental Center is an important attraction in Denmark: Lejre is a major theme park in Denmark, awarded 4 stars by the Danish Tourist Attractions association, as "a sterling attraction at national level". Lejre Experimental Center is also a path beating institution at a world level in the field of experimental archaeology and communication of knowledge.

There are many animals at Lejre Experimental Centre: hens, geese, ducks, wild boar, cows, horses and cats, but unfortunately no dogs other than those brought by visitors, even though the dog is man’s oldest four-legged friend. Since 2004 Lejre Experimental Center guests also a little flock of "aurochs". The actual aurochs (Bos pimigenius) extinguished in the 17th century, but a breeding project since the 30´ies of the XX century made it possible to "reconstruct" their original physical characteristics.
Throughout history humans have influenced the development of domesticated animals, and some of the greatest changes have been seen since the agricultural reforms in the 18th century. At Lejre Experimental Centre we work to preserve old animal breeds – especially of Danish origin. Our work contributes to securing a “gene bank”, which can be drawn upon, also by modern animal breeders.
