Any visit of Maramures would not be complete without a stop at the Maramures Village Museum, one of the few of its kind in the country. If you want to see what it looks like a traditional village in Maramures, as architecture is highly appreciated in this area, or to admire costumes, then the Village Museum is definitely the answer. The outdoor museum is located in the southeast of the city (the entry from Baia Mare) on the Dobaies Hill (you can reach it by car following the road DN 18). The Village Museum was opened in 1981 at the initiative of Francis and Michael Dancus Nistor, who started collecting exhibits since the 1970es. The museum is actually a distinct section of the Museum of Ethnography in Sighet (by Bogdan Voda Street. 1) where you can also see other objects, tools, icons, furniture and costumes from ancient times until today.

Beautiful wooden houses
Some 30 buildings that make up the museum are arranged in space according to place of origin. Thus, you will see the first house-Viseu Borsa then Cosau-Mara, Lower and Middle Iza Valley, then in the Tisza basin and Ruscova. You can see even houses that belonged to other ethnic groups have been established over time in this area: Slavs, Germans, Hungarians or Jews. It is impressing that all these buildings are mainly made of wood (oak, fir, spruce) painted in dark colors (typical Maramures) and the base is made of river rock. The beautiful wooden gates, especially characteristic of this area, have a great architectural value. The interior of the houses can also be visited, some are still in original decorations (especially the doors) of local artisans.

Living museum
The museum shows not only traditional houses but also traditional fruit trees (plantarea pomilor) and traditional livestock breeds of the Maramures.
