The mountain village situated at 1500 m a.s.l. was founded in 1244 by Walser people coming from the near Pomatt Valley (Italy). Today it has 50 inhabitants and still shows the original characteristics with its ancient log homes, the younger stone buildings, the narrow paths in untouched natural surroundings, the old German vernacular and the particular aura: all these elements can’t but fascinate the many visitors.

The Museum Walserhaus was opened in 1938 as first ethnographic Museum of the Ticino region. It is housed in an ancient building dating back to 1386. Since the inauguration of the Museum, the exhibition has gradually and continually been enlarged. In 2006 it was renewed and the stable by the Museum as well as the garden have been integrated into the exhibition-concept.

The exhibition of the ancient tools in the stable and the variety garden in front of the house show the clever methods with which the mountain farmers were able to exploit the limited resources in order to be as self-sufficient as possible. The ancient varieties grown in the Museum-garden show the narrow choice on which the mountain farmers based their food supply and which varieties could survive in this raw climate conditions. The garden was renewed in 2006 with the help of Pro Specie Rara.
