The site is some 100 metres above sea-level. It was created in 1986 on the site of an old farm and its remit is to preserve and exhibit the best of the native and introduced plants of the islands; more than half of its 250 species are native. It covers 8000m2 and receives
9000 visitors a year. It is a small but cleverly laid-out collection in two parts, either side of the little visitor centre where an interpretive video is available to see. On one side is a collection of native plants, clearly labelled in Portuguese, English and Latin. On the other is a garden with familiar herbs mixed in with the common cultivated plants of the island. Since 1996 a second area has been developed in the parish of Pedro Miguel. It is much larger, at 60,000m2. Its location at an altitude of 400m was chosen to favour the montane species which prefer cooler, damper conditions.

The Faial Botanical Garden is involved in a very important cooperation between the Madeira Botanical Garden and the Viera & Clavijo Botanical Garden of the Canary Islands. The Macaronesia Seed Bank is a programme for the sustainable conservation of plant diversity. The project was funded in part by the Community Initiatives Programme INTERREG IIIB, Azores - Madeira - Canaries 2000-2006, as well as by the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER).
